Which in your opinion shoots more accurate, the marlin model 925 bolt action 22 or the remington 597 22lr.
1) I got a Marlin 62 lever action carbine in .256 Winchester Magnum (a .357 Magnum necked down to .25 Caliber. It has the power of a .222 Remington).
2) I got it cheap because the owner was tired of owning a rifle with hard-to-get ammo.
3) It’s a good rifle for ME because I had a detached retina, and the doctor warned me that any serious recoil would mean I would go blind in that eye again, and need surgery. The .256 Winchester Magnum has almost no recoil in the six and a half pound carbine I have.
4) I know the gun will be powerful enough. Why? Well, the all time record Boone and Crockett Whitetail deer was shot by a .25-20 Winchester. http://www.burnettcounty.com/DocumentVie…
That’s the same bullet as my gun, but 500 feet per second slower AND the deer in the Angeles National Forest (behind Los Angeles) where I hunt have small deer half the size of the record monster deer shot in Wisconsin. I do my hunting at close range, 50 to 80 yards.
5) I don’t know how to reload, but I have a friend who will reload the shells for me, for a price. Commercial ammunition is available BUT I hunt in the California Condor Endangered Species Zone (half of California) so I cannot use lead bullets. I have to use Copper Bullets. I have ordered some 80 grain Copper Bullets from Barnes.
6) My friend said he would load the bullets, IF I bought him some RCBS dies.
7) So HERE is my question: Should I buy dies to size .357 Magnum shells down to .256 Winchester Magnum, OR should I buy .256 dies, and buy .256 shell casings? Which would you do?
Morgan is starting to remind me of Brandon Phillips! Very unprofessional. Now I understand why he did this because he was hit nearly twice. But I couldn’t help but laugh when he got clotheslined the the Marlins first baseman. If you haven’t seen it check it out it was a nice shot, but this isn’t wrestling it is baseball. So waht are your thoughts and what do you think MLB will do with Morgan?
i’m a 20 year old male. not very big i’m only 5′5″ and 113lbs.
I am basically wanting to start shooting and right now my path is toward a marlin 925 .22lr rifle.
reasons being its cheap, ammo is cheap, no recoil, reliable, accurate, good to learn on.
i heard anything more than a .223 isn’t ideal for a beginner because you can develop bad flinch habits and what not. i can understand that, but not quite sure if that reigns true for everybody.
i would like something a little bigger than a .22lr for more power and range, like any of those .223, .243, .270, .308, and the aught 6. but i dont want to develop any bad habits, nor do i want to spend significantly more per round. i am well aware how affordable .22’s are and i love it.
if only there was a cheap center fire…what’s the cheapest centerfire anyway? i’d assume .223
so anyway my question is, are the calibers bigger than .22lr raelly that bad for a first rifle? is it true that i will develop these bad habits that will harm my growth and marksmanship? also, would it be worth it to check out .17hmr rifles? i’m not sure how much they cost, but if theyr’e similar to a centerfire then is it worth it if you can just get a centerfire for teh same amount (and ammo)?
just wondering.
i’d be content with a nice marlin .22lr :). it’s just i’d want a pretty good “all around” rifle is all. because it’d be nice to rely on it in home defense scenario without having to buy multiple firearms. but i understand there can really never be a good all around rifle, (except for the lovely m1 garand and mauser!!!
yes i’m a fan, sorry). it’s just i really want to get my money’s worth as a money starved college student.
My hunting plans for this year were destroyed, so I will be hunting alone. I am trying to drown my sorrows in this new gun I got. I did something evil. I met an older man at the rifle range who was bewailing the fact that his Marlin 62 .256 Winchester Magnum (.357 Magnum necked down to .25 Caliber) was too hard to get bullets for. Being a not very nice person, I didn’t bother telling the old gent you can buy any ammo you want on the internet. Instead, I bought the rifle for a steal. I tricked him. Sort of. I was stupid and didn’t notice a lot of rust on the rifle until I got home.
I like the rifle because I am very recoil sensitive. I had a detached retina, and any heavy recoil, and cause me to go blind in that eye and need surgery. The .256 is powerful, but has no recoil. Anyway, I am now planning on deer hunting this year with my Vintage Marlin 62 six and a half pound carbine in .256 Winchester Magnum. I hunt at between 50 to 80 yards, so power should not be a problem. The world record Boone and Crockett Whitetail Deer was killed by a .25-20, and that is 500 feet per second slower than a .256. Also the deer here in the Angeles National Forest behind Los Angeles don’t run that big.
Small problem. I hunt in the California Endangered Condor Zone, so I need to use copper bullets. .256 is factory loaded in 60 grain, 70 grain, and 87 grain lead bullets. The only copper bullets I can find in .25 caliber are 100 grain. I know a guy who will reload whatever I like, if I buy the dies, which I have already sent away for. So I am trying to find out if you can load 100 grain .25 caliber copper bullets into a .256 Winchester Magnum.
He was hit for the incident in the previous game running over the catcher. Morgan then stole 2nd and 3rd after being hit. Apparently, Volstad didn’t like that. So in the 6th Volstad pitched behind Morgan attempting to hit him again. Of course Volstad was wanting confrontation you could tell from the body language after he threw the pitch. And of course Nyjer obliged.
People fail to point out that Volstad hit three Nationals in three consecutive innings. Volstad started the entire confrontation. He should have hit Morgan the first time and then left it at that. If you don’t want bases to be stolen then don’t put him on base. Volstad asked for that when he decided to retaliate by hitting Morgan.
The person complaining about thumbs down for their great answer. Well, a lot was left out. Like the fact that Morgan was already hit once. Volstad then threw at him a second time in the 6th. Volstad also plunked two Nationals way before that too. I wish people would stop trying to fudge the actual incident to cast Morgan as the bad guy here. He got hit and that should have been the end. Volstad’s pride got hurt after Morgan stole two bases. Don’t put him on base if you can’t hold the runner on.
If you don’t know about what he did, watch the video at the top of the page through this link!!!http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story…
Tied with the Reds for the best record in the NL and 3 games above the Phillies in the NL East. Even with the Phillies getting their guys back from the DL, the Braves seem focused on claiming the NL East title as they’ve done so many times in the 90’s.
However the Phillies have been the team to beat in the NL East for the last few years having won the NL East last year by 6 games over the Marlins, and 7 over the Braves. In 2008, having won the NL East by 3 games over the Mets and 20 games over the Braves! In 2007, they squeaked the NL East by 1 game over the Mets and 5 over the Braves. And in 2006, the Mets had the title, but the Phillies were 6 games better than the Braves.
My question: With the Braves back in 1st place in the NL East, they’ve seemed to be closely above the Phillies for much of the season, and remain 3 ahead of them still. Are the Braves a legitimate World Series contender this year, with the best home record in baseball at 49-19?
With the NL winning the All-Star game for the first time in something like 13-14 years, and the NL having home field advantage in the World Series and seemingly throughout the post season, can you guys see the Braves going the distance this year?
BQ: If the Braves make it to the World Series AND if they Yankees make it to te World Series, will the results be similar to 1999? 1996? Or do you see anything different happening this time around?
Think about the starting rotation, the offense, the defense between those teams and try to assess which would be able to win it all this year.
I tend to ask long questions. If this is a problem, STOP, leave, and read another question. No one is holding you at gunpoint and forcing you to read this, correct? You can stop now and go answer a one sentence question.
I am REALLY depressed because at great expense of time, money, and energy, my original hunting plans were destroyed. So I have been casting about for something to re-interest my self in hunting.
I did something quasi immoral. At the shooting range I was at, I struck up a conversation with an older gentleman. He was interested in a gun I had called a Universal Vulcan Carbine. He pointed out that he had a Universal Ferret, which was a scope only M-1 Carbine with a civilian stock, chambered for the .256 Winchester Magnum (a .357 Magnum bullet necked down to .25 caliber). He let me shoot it. I was impressed, it was very powerful, yet had no recoil (I am very recoil sensitive, having had a detached retina). Then he also mentioned he had a Marlin 62 lever action rifle in .256 Winchester Magnum. He complained that it was almost impossible to get ammo for the Two rifles any more, and that after he used up the last of his ammo, he was afraid he was going to have to give up shooting his two .256 rifles for good. This is where I did something not wholly above board. I didn’t bother to tell him that you can buy almost any ammunition you want over the internet. That was wrong. Instead, I asked if he was selling the Marlin Model 62 lever action (I didn’t want the Ferret, I have a dislike of automatic rifles). To my shock and surprise he said he was willing to sell it. To my greater shock, he was willing to sell it at a stupidly low price. (!) I didn’t wait for him to change his mind. I went home the proud owner of a Marlin Model 62, the oldest gun case you have ever seen in your life, and felt my self quite smart. When I got home, I noticed there was a lot of rust on the side of barrel and frame I hadn’t noticed. Oh, well, the bore was fine.
I normally hunt deer at between 50 and 80 yards. I have on hand, from mail order, some 75 grain bullets, and some 87 grain bullets. The 75 grain bullets are 2500 feet per second. The 87 grain bullets are 2200 feet per second. The lack of recoil is fantastic. With a four power scope, due to the lack of recoil, I can shoot amazingly well at 50 yards, which is about the range I normally kill my deer. I know the bullet is powerful enough. One of the biggest deer ever shot was killed by a .25-20, and THAT particular cartridge is moving about 500 feet per second slower than a .256 Winchester Magnum. http://www.burnettcounty.com/DocumentVie…
So my question is, what should I use on deer? The 75 grain bullets at 2500 feet per second, or the 87 grain bullets at 2200 feet per second?
i heard something about one player from the marlins was being disrespectful by stealing bases while the marlins were already loosing by a ton of runs, i don’t get it, can someone explain what was so disrespectful by him doing this??
